 May 25 Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the last Monday in May to honor U.S. military personnel who died in service. It was initially called Decoration Day and was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved several federal holidays, including Memorial Day, to designated Mondays to create three-day weekends for federal workers. The change officially took effect in 1971, establishing the final Monday in May as Memorial Day.
